The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
